Be Obsessed Or Be Average


Just this past week I was speaking with an amateur marathon runner who is looking to take her game to the next level.

She not only wants to better her marathon time this year, she wants to crush the competition and win the Boston Marathon.

I absolutely love coaching people who are all in and will do whatever it takes and that was exactly our discussion.

As soon as I found out her goal I wanted to test how serious she really was, So I gave it to her 100% straight up.

I said "if this is what you truly want you must become obsessed with this goal. You must be willing to do whatever it takes and out work every other person who says they want the same goal as you. If hearing that doesn't inspire the hell out of you, I strongly recommend that you don't get your hopes up."

Of course many of you are probably thinking "what kind of coach are you?"

Well… an honest one.

Before I work with any athletes, it's crucial I get a true understanding of exactly where they are at in their mind before I waste my time giving them information they aren't willing to do.

People love to talk and talk and talk. I've heard it hundreds if not thousands of times before. Someone wants to excel and be the best at what they do, when the truth is they only want to talk about it and aren't willing to put in the work necessary to finish the job.

I want to be clear that I'm not talking about anything other than becoming obsessed with anything and everything to do with that goal.

In Margareete's case, it's crucial she begins to study the detail of every component she is doing.

Measuring and analyzing her sleep patterns to find her perfect sleep timing and put on repeat.

Measuring in analyzing her hydration levels until it's optimized and put on repeat.

Measuring and analyzing her pre-run nutrition intake until it's optimized and put on repeat.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg, but you get the idea.

If you truly want to be the best at something, you must become obsessed.

You must be willing to go above and beyond what others are willing to put in to earn the victory.

Now of course not all of us are looking to run a marathon. The good Lord knows I'm certainly not, but the content of this message is exactly the same for whatever context you decide to dominate in your life.

By the way, one week after our conversation Margareete ran a half marathon and won the race. She is well on her way.

So many of us say we want to be the best at something. That is awesome and I say freaking go for it.

That said if you are serious, you must be willing to do what it takes to match your words with action.

You must become obsessed, or you will simply end up average.

The choice as always is yours.

Make It Happen


"You only get paid for done."

These are the great words of one of my mentors Pat Rigsby.

I've carried this wisdom with me now for just over seven years and personally it has helped me transform my life.

Now of course we can say this about so many situations in our lives that led us to step up in a new way we never have before.

The beauty of this particular quote is that it carries into every area of our lives.

You only get paid for done. You only reap the benefits of things you follow through on and complete.

Whatever situation you are in, whatever hand you have been dealt, if you don't finish, you will never benefit from your efforts to the degree you have the potential to.

I personally know that you deserve better and the world deserves what you can bring to the table.

You deserve to experience the multitude of rewards that go along with completion.

All of us, and I mean every single one of us, have so many ideas that have the power to change the world.

At the same time almost all of us never take the massive action necessary to bring these ideas to fruition.

We talk about them. We daydream about them. We make excuses why they are not complete.


Why not invest every ounce of our energy we waste talking into becoming obsessed with action and follow through to the point where you achieve the result you are destined to create.

Get the hell out of the way of your greatness and make it happen.

As I write this, I realize this message is also a message I need to hear for myself.

Regardless of where you are right now: successful or on the way up to your definition of success, we always owe it to ourselves to knock ourselves out of our comfort zone.

Get comfortable with the uncomfortable.

If we don't, we shrink.

Every single person I have ever spoken with craves growth in 1 or several areas of their lives.

It's up to us to step out into the uncharted waters, figure it out along the way, and ultimately make it happen.

Learn from Failure


Since when did failure become something to be frowned upon as opposed to something to be celebrated?

After reading about the lives of the greats such as Steve Jobs, Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison and others, it's become 100% apparent that their greatness came as a result of failing over and over again.

Looking at my own life, I couldn't agree more. The only points in my life where I have grown significantly is after I crashed and burned finding myself at the bottom.

How are we supposed to learn to do something right if we don't first find out how not to do it?

At the same time a fear of failure runs rapidly through our culture as if our many failures define us.

I've got news for you and for all of us…

We are only failures when we give ourselves permission to be.

In other words, when we fail, as long as we get back up and go after it again, we will constantly be improving and will always get to the finish line as long as we are persistent and committed as hell.

What's even more interesting is that if we never fell along the way, we would never be tested to think differently which is where true greatness comes.

One of the most humbling lessons I've ever learned is that failure is a necessity. Failure must be something we run towards on a daily basis in order to create the lives of our dreams.

My challenge for you this week is to look at whatever you are struggling with currently in your life and begin going after it with greater vigor than you ever have before.

Run towards failure knowing you were going to get up just as fast as you fail and push even harder moving forward with the new knowledge you just gained.

Time to crush it.

Are You Humble?


So is there really a difference between being wrong and being humble?

Honestly in my opinion the two go hand-in-hand.

Being humble is not only understanding that you don’t have to be right all the time, but that you are inevitably going to be wrong in many cases and that is how it’s supposed to be.

The key is accepting and understanding it as only opening more doors for your own personal growth.

The minute we shut down others opinions, we are shutting ourselves off from our own expansion.

One of the most valuable lessons I’ve ever learned is that I have learned so much from others as a result of being wrong with my initial thoughts or perceptions.

Being humble is being able to set aside who is right was wrong in order to find out what the best solution truly is.

Let me ask you question…

Would you rather find the right solution or be right just to be right?

Being humble puts you on the same playing field with every other person around you.

It doesn’t exalt your opinions, abilities or perspectives over anyone else’s.

It leaves you open and ready to find the best solution to the problem regardless of who the information comes from.

It puts you in a position to learn and grow through those around you. Just as it should be.

If I’ve learned anything it’s that I have so much more to learn, and who better to learn from than those I surround myself with?

Case and point… if you aren’t humble, your personal growth is stunned.

So your challenge this week is to think about wear in your life you are being stubborn even when you know you maybe incorrect?

Who could you reach out to for their opinion on the struggle you are dealing with in order to push your progress forward?

Are You Disciplined?


Nothing incredible was ever created without a mass amount of discipline.

Discipline is simply a commitment to a cause.

A commitment to overcoming, finding the answer, never stopping until whatever you set out to accomplish is finished.

There are several types of discipline, but I am going to dive into two kinds today.
1. The discipline needed for have to projects.
2. The discipline needed for want to project.

Which discipline do you think is stronger and more unbreakable?

Well… the discipline needed for have to projects is in alignment with what most of us would you define as our jobs.

Yes we are committed to them but at the same time, how committed are we really?

Through talking with hundreds of individuals over the years, what I have found is that you’re only as committed as we have to be for have to projects.

In other words, we do what needs to be done to make those we are reporting to happy.

In most cases nothing more and nothing less.

Now let’s talk about want to projects.

When we truly desire something or to be involved in something, there is a completely different approach with our actions.

Our actions are methodical, strategic, multifaceted, caring, detailed and complete. I’m sure you can agree, when you want to do something, the actions you put out are of much higher quality then when you have to do something.

My question for you today is… What happens when you are able to cross both disciplines and combine them into one?

In other words what happens when you are doing something professionally that you want to do?

The answer is very simple.

We no longer see that have to projects as getting in the way. We now see them as on the way.

When we are doing what we love and what we want to do, the have to’s are much more few and far between and when they do appear, we do them with the care and detail needed to create success for the big picture.

Of course even when you are doing exactly what you want to do, you will be faced with challenges.

The main take away however is that in the face of those challenges, you will be firing on all cylinders.


At the end of the day, it’s attached to exactly what you want to do and when you were doing what you desire you are inspired.

When you are inspired, you thrive.

My challenge for you today is to take a look at your life and determine how much of your discipline on a daily basis is comprised of have to and want to discipline.

If you don’t like what you see, there is only one person who can change that.
